Mount Marty Volleyball Team Raises Breast Cancer Awareness

The Mount Marty Lancer Volleyball team, in conjunction with the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) participated in a month long campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer.
October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Lancer women wore Dig Pink warm-up shirts and inserted breast cancer awareness facts into their programs during the final home games of the season.

Breast Cancer Facts
•    Every 2 minutes, there is a new breast cancer diagnosis.
•    Every 14 minutes, a life is lost to this disease.
•    More than 40,000 people will die this year from breast cancer,
     400 of them will be men.
•    85 percent of all diagnosis will have no family history.
•    1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
•    Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women ages 40-55

Getting test regularly is the BEST way for women to lower their risk of dying from breast cancer.
 
Factors That May Increase Breast Cancer Risk:
•    Getting older
•    Having an inherited mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 breast
     cancer genes
•    Having a family history of breast cancer
•    Having high breast density on a mammogram
•    Starting menopause after age 55
•    Never having children
•    Having your first child after age 35
•    Having high bone density
•    Being overweight after menopause or gaining weight as an adult
•    Having more than 1 drink of alcohol per day
•    Current or recent use of birth control
•    Currently or recently using combined estrogen and progesterone hormone replacement therapy
