Mount Marty To Perform At ‘Christmas at The Cathedral’

Mount Marty College Choir has been asked to perform at the annual “Christmas at The Cathedral” celebration at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls Dec. 18-21.

“Christmas at The Cathedral” is a highly acclaimed community Christmas celebration that is entering its second decade of sold-out performances, this year’s production is titled “The Dream” and will feature Mount Marty Choir, as well as the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Henry Charles Smith, along with world class talent with local ties, including soprano Stacey Stofferahn, tenor Scott Piper, the Christmas at The Cathedral Choir and actress Vicki Fuller.

“The Dream” follows the Christmas experience from Joseph’s perspective. This will be the world premier of two songs written specifically for “Christmas at The Cathedral” — “The Hymn,” written by Steven Yarbrough and “Thy Will Be Done,” written by Dan Goeller in honor of Joseph and his extraordinary faith.

To prepare for Mount Marty’s upcoming Vespers  performance and “Christmas at The Cathedral” event, the choir has had to add extra rehearsal time outside of class.

Although juggling an extra commitment can be hard on Mount Marty’s already busy student population, choir director Dr. Sean Vogt said the students are excited about the upcoming performances.

“It’s a great opportunity to sing music associated with such a wonderful season and event in Christianity,” Vogt said. “It also gives the students the opportunity to sing with a professional orchestra and to do so in such an awe-inspiring space. How often do all of those elements come together in one event? I’m happy for them because I am confident this experience will be one of those memories that will remain with them long after they have left Mount Marty.”

“Christmas at The Cathedral” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18 and Friday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21 at St. Joseph Cathedral, Sioux Falls.

Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards the restoration of one of South Dakota’s most significant civic and sacred landmarks — St. Joseph Cathedral.
