Wortmann Named Athlete-of-the-Week

The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and Hauff Mid-America Sports announced Laura Wortmann was selected as the athlete-of-the-week in women’s field events for February 4 – February 10, 2008.

Wortmann, a Mount Marty junior from Crofton, Nebraska, placed first at the Wayne State Invite in the shot put with a throw of 45-06.5.  The mark is the best in the GPAC and ranks her fourth in the NAIA.

Mount Marty track & field coach, Randy Fischer, was thrilled with her selection. “We are very proud of Laura as she has worked very hard for this honor and is a great asset to Mount Marty College not only with her abilities, but also with her leadership as well.”

Fischer added, “A lot of credit goes to our assistant coach this year, Lenni Billberg.  She works very closely with our throwing athletes and it really shows in the results we’ve seen.”

As assistant coach, Billberg has worked directly with Laura on her technique.  “Laura is the dictionary definition of hard work and discipline,” Billberg said.  “Our world of 'expect success without work' has not affected this fine performer.  It is great to see success to an athlete doing it the right way.”

Wortmann is currently seeking her Bachelor of Arts in Physical & Secondary Education and is the daughter of Dave and Sandra Wortmann of Crofton.

Hauff Mid-America Sports is the presenting sponsor of the 2007-2008 GPAC players-of-the-week and players and coaches-of-the-year awards program.
