Student Advising

Meeting Your Advisor

Dr. Katie HarrellDr. Katie Harrell, Director of Freshman Advising and Retention Counselor

How long have you been at MMC?
I started at Mount Marty in September of 2010. I teach a section of First-year Seminar each semester and coordinate the PASS program.

What is one thing that you enjoy about MMC?
I truly appreciate the personalization and sense of community on campus. I am able to get to each of the students by name. I also have the chance to get to know each students individual life story. This helps me empower the students to reach for bigger and better things!

If you could give a new student one piece of advice; what would it be?
Go to class!!! The key to college success, time management, and establishing great study skills starts with attending all classes. It also allows you to meet new people, build study groups and get to know your professors.

Dr. Janis HausmannDr. Janis Hausmann, Associate Professor of English

How long have you been at MMC?
I have been at Mount Marty College for twelve years, and I have directed the learning center here for six years. I teach all three of the freshman composition courses, English 099, English 103, and English 104.

What is one thing that you enjoy about MMC?
The sense of community and honesty I feel with the students here. Sometimes when I'm on other college campuses, I realize how fortunate we are.

If you could give a new student one piece of advice; what would it be?
Each student is responsible for his or her own education. Your friends can't take your tests with you; your teammates really can't help you decide on your career. You need to do all of this on your own.

S. Candy ChrystalS. Candy Chrystal, Associate Professor of Teacher Education

How long have you been at MMC?
Twenty years!

What is one thing that you enjoy about MMC?
I love that we are small enough that I can get to know the students and watch them develop over the four years and achieve their goals. I love the fact that I might have students for more than one semester and that I can get to know them even better.

If you could give a new student one piece of advice; what would it be?
Don't pretend: if you have a problem, admit it and seek the help to solve it. Pretending takes energy that could better be used to fix the problem. All problems can be solved!

If you could give a new student one piece of advice; what would it be?
Get involved! Join a club, take a course outside your major, do something new. Your life will be richer for the experience.

I really enjoy working with the students at MMC. I love seeing them come in as anxious Freshman and then leave as confident graduates. I also enjoy watching my students perform in plays, concerts, and athletic events.

My area of specialty is Nursing.

What is one thing that you enjoy about MMC?
What I love most about Mount Marty is the students and watching them further develop their goals, personality, and life goals. Even as an instructor, I am called to stretch my areas of interest. One moment I am the best fan at a sporting event, the next I am laughing at play, the next I am playing the saxophone in band, and the next I am gaining insights from my students in class.

Live life to its fullest! Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way! Be the person God has created you to be! And love with all your heart and soul!

Don't over extend yourself. Plan out your schedule and realize that you are here for your studies. While extracurricular activities are important they should not consume your schedule.
