Besides coursework, there are opportunities to experience research activities. Research by the student provides a chance to present a paper at a state meeting and have abstracts and other works published with such organizations as the SD Academy of Science. These are opportunities that assist students as they seek acceptance into graduate programs.

Other opportunities include membership in Tri Beta National Biological Honors Society and National Science Foundation. Some chemistry majors join Lambda Delta Lambda, a national honor society for the physical sciences. They participate in the health fair, scientific meetings, various service projects each year, and social events.
