| If you think you might be called to be a teacher AND you enjoy being around
younger children, then you may be called to be an elementary school teacher. The
process of becoming a teacher involves personal growth and reflection as well as
recognizing and practicing all the skills that contribute to excellent teaching.
To prepare you to be an excellent teacher, we suggest that you get as much
experience working with "kids" as possible - babysitting, daycare work, Sunday
school, coaching. From these experiences, you can determine whether working with
children gives you life: do they energize you, do you look forward to being with
them? Both are very good signs that teaching may be a rewarding calling for you.
The elementary education program focuses in on what to expect from children,
how to motivate and teach children, and content areas necessary to be a
classroom leader. Multiple field experiences are recommended in order to have
experience with various age groups.
Mount Marty College offers a teacher education program that fosters growth
among our students in order to produce competent, confident teachers. It is the
mission of the Mount Marty College Education Department to graduate quality,
committed teachers.
Mount Marty College prepares students to become teachers who realize the
impact they can have on the world. Our small classes afford a better
understanding of our students' potential as teachers. Because so much of a
teacher's success is based on the teacher's basic personality, we believe that
by knowing our students, we can better help them grow in character and teaching
ability.
The teacher education program prepares students to be certified as
elementary, middle school, secondary, and/or special education teachers. The
teacher education program is in line with the mission of Mount Marty College, offering a liberal arts education that prepares students for a contemporary
world of work, service to the human community, and personal growth.
At Mount Marty College, we believe it is important to combine theory and
practice to ensure confident and competent teachers. MMC students have the
opportunity to work in area schools
from their freshman orientation class, to field experience, practicum and into
student teaching. This unique curriculum facilitates graduates to become
proficient, quality teachers.
Mount Marty College offers a full semester of student teaching. This length of
experience helps our graduates confidently pursue a job and competently fill
their positions. Given the small size of classes, professors teach all classes,
know their students, and commit to helping their students to grow personally and
professionally.
