Exercise Wellness students study physical activity and other healthy lifestyles
as they relate and contribute to optimal health and wellness. That study
includes the kinesiological and physiological foundations of physical activity,
nutrition, stress management, social/cultural issues, and factors involved in
health behavior change. The purpose of the Exercise & Wellness curriculum is to
prepare professionals and scholars in exercise and physical activity
leadership/management, and health promotion and wellness.
Acquiring a degree in Exercise Wellness provides students with a basic general
education. It also provides the knowledge, skills, and professional expertise to
help individuals across the life span to adopt healthy behaviors leading to
increased wellness and optimal health. Students are exposed to the latest
research and practices designed to enhance fitness, health promotion, and
wellness, including both laboratory and field experiences.
One of the most unique aspects of the Exercise Wellness program is an internship
program that provides pre-professional experience in all segments of the
fitness/wellness industry, health promotion, and health professions. The program
has two emphasis areas in Exercise Wellness to include athletic training and
physical exercise wellness.
The Exercise Wellness major prepares students with general coursework that will
enable them to pursue graduate level programs to include athletic training,
kinesiology, biomechanics, exercise science, physical therapy, occupational
therapy, and medicine. This program also prepares students sit for certification
exams offered by various organizations to include:
- American Council on Exercise (ACE) to include certification for Personal
Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Clinical Exercise Specialist, Lifestyle &
Weight Management Consultant
- American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) to include certification for
Personal Trainer, Health & Fitness Instructor, Exercise Specialist, Registered
Clinical Exercise Physiologist
- Aerobics & Fitness Association of America (AFAA)
- National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) to include
certification for Personal Trainer, Strength & Conditioning Specialist
- National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM) to include certification
for Personal Trainer, Group Trainer, Performance Enhancement Specialist
