As Mount Marty College Human Services majors, students will gain a broad
understanding of human behavior to allow for a better understanding why
individuals act the way they do. Students will develop a critical understanding
of the field of psychology, sociology and criminal justice and gain insight into
human behavior. Given the small size of classes, professors teach all classes,
know their students, and commit to helping their students to grow personally and
professionally.
The Human Services major fosters sociological and psychological insights into
human behavior. In the coursework there is a strong emphasis on cultural
understanding, human motivation, and the scientific inquiry into explaining
human behavior. These issues are looked at from a variety of different
perspectives, which come together to give a rich understanding of human
behavior.
The Human Services program prepares students to work with special populations in
the human service industry. This emphasis teaches skills necessary to work with
children, adolescents, elderly, developmentally disabled, or mentally ill in
many settings.
Students may study personality development, human relationships, and people's
adjustments to different environments, mental illness, and aspects of the
criminal justice field. The program also provides the coursework necessary to be
a certified level one drug and alcohol counselor in South Dakota.
Program also incorporates basic experimental procedures as well as techniques
for interacting with patients or clients. At Mount Marty, we believe it is
important to combine theory and practice to ensure confident and competent
practitioners. The curriculum combines a core of pre-professional studies in the
social sciences and experiential learning to help build your personal
development and professional competence.
