Note | This major is only offered only in conjunction with Teacher Education (K-12 and Secondary Education).

Coaching Certification | Each state has requirements for the coaching endorsement to be included with the teaching certificate. The student is advised by their sophomore year to check with their advisor, the education advisor and the certifying agency in the state in which they wish to teach and coach for exact requirements. The following plan will meet most requirements of area states.

PED 100 | Introduction to Physical Education | 2 hours
This course is an orientation to the history, philosophy, and objectives of physical education. Fall Odd

PED 108, 208, 308, 408 | Varsity Sports | 1 hour
This course involves regular and systematic participation in intercollegiate sport. One credit per year is given for participation in varsity sports. 108 - 1st year; 208 - 2nd year, 308 - 3rd year, 408 - 4th year.

PED 133 | Gymnastics/Tumbling | 1 hour
This course is an introduction to basic gymnastics equipment, routines, and safety considerations. Study and practice of the fundamental skills, techniques, and safety involved in tumbling and matwork are addressed. Two contact hours per week. Instructor approval is required. Fall Even

PED 135 | Dance | 1 hour
This course is the study of the historical development of dance and its transition to contemporary society through participation in selected dances of foreign countries and the United States. Two contact hours per week. Spring Even

PED 200 | Principles in Coaching | 1 hour
This course is a general overview of the fundamentals and principles of coaching. This course serves as a basis for the other theory of coaching courses. Spring

PED 211 | Individual/Dual Sports I | 1 hour
This course is the study and practice of the fundamental skills, techniques, strategy, and rules for activities common to secondary physical education programs. Specific activities include golf, badminton, and racquetball. Two contact hours per week. Fall Odd

PED 212 | Individual/Dual Sports II | 1 hour
This course is the study and practice of the fundamental skills, techniques, strategy, and rules for activities common to secondary physical education programs. Specific activities include tennis, bowling and archery. Two contact hours per week. Spring Even

PED 213 | Team Sports I | 1 hour
This course is the study and practice of the fundamental skills, techniques, strategy, and rules for activities common to secondary physical education programs. Specific activities include soccer, flag football, and basketball. Two contact hours per week. Fall Even

PED 214 | Team Sports II | 1 hour
This course is the study and practice of the fundamental skills, techniques, strategy, and rules for activities common to secondary physical education programs. Specific activities include volleyball, softball, and hockey. Two contact hours per week. Spring Odd

PED 215 | Sports Officiating | 2 hours
This course includes a study of rules and mechanics of officiating for the sports of football, volleyball, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Fall Odd

PED 217 | First Aid & CPR | 2 hours
This course is a standard Red Cross first aid course. Successful completion of the class results in A.R.C. certification. (every semester))

PED 225 | Fitness-Wellness | 2 hours
This course is an introduction to the basic concept of wellness and offers the student experience related to cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. Other activities include assessment of fitness and various exercise routines, stress reduction, disease prevention and program design. Fall Even

PED 226 | Strength Training and Conditioning | 2 hours
The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the principles, techniques, and physiology behind strength training. Various topics relating to strength and resistance training will be discussed in detail including energy expenditure power, specificity, free vs. machine weights, and the design of resistance programs. The goal is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge to design and supervise strength and conditioning programs for various populations. (Spring even)

PED 230 | Human Anatomy and Physiology | 4 hours
This course is a study of the structure and function of the human body emphasizing the body systems that maintain the human body. Importance is placed on broad, general anatomical and physiological principles as they apply to structure and function of the human body. Prerequisite: BIO 103 or 106 or equivalent. Fall Even

PED 315 | Elementary Methods of Physical Education | 2 hours
This course is an introduction to the principles of teaching and evaluating the physical and health development of elementary school children (K-8). Lesson planning, curriculum development and supervision of the physical education program are covered. Spring

PED 330 | Field Experience in Coaching | 1 hour
This course involves a field experience in coaching gained by working with a sports team under the supervision of department faculty and the coaching staff of the high school, junior high school, or approved club sport. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing and consent of department faculty. (fall & spring)

This course is the study of current health problems and the formation of a philosophy of health based upon an understanding of the human organism and the individual's responsibility to community health. Spring Odd

PED 353 | Biomechanics | 3 hours
This course is an analytic and synthetic study of body movements. Biomechanics and anatomical kinesiology are emphasized in lecture, discussion, and lab. Prerequisite: PED 230 or equivalent. Spring Even

PED 382 | Adapted Physical Education | 2 hours
This course is a study of principles and programming to meet the unique needs of individuals limited, restricted, special, or handicapped in their locomotor activity. Particular attention to programming for individuals affected by mental illness or retardation is given. Prerequisite: PED 315 or 451 Spring Even

PED 440 | Organization/Administration of Physical Education/Athletic Programs | 2 hours
This course is the study of organization and management theory and practice as it relates to physical education, sports, and the fitness industry. Emphasis will primarily be on elementary and secondary programs with consideration for special populations and the fitness fields. Each student will be introduced to the practical application of theory as it relates to managing personnel and programs. Spring Odd

PED 450 | Exercise Physiology | 3 hours
Lecture, discussion and laboratory will revolve around the effects of physical activity on neuromuscular, cardiorespiratory, and metabolic control mechanisms. Laboratories will demonstrate current applications in exercise testing. Prerequisite: PED 230 or equivalent. Spring Odd

PED 451 | Secondary Health and Physical Education Methods | 2 hours
This course is an introduction to the principles of teaching and evaluation for grades 6-12. Curriculum developments, class organization, lesson planning, and guidelines for establishing a health and physical education program are covered. A unit on methods for measuring and evaluation unique to physical activities is included. Prerequisite: PED 100. Fall Even
