MAJOR
Secondary Education and History '10
A second-year student majoring in Secondary Education and History, David Schmit is keeping busy in and out of the classroom. He's a member of history club and education club, was a referee for junior league flag football, and is a member of Mount Marty's two choir ensembles.
Two Choirs, One Passion.
"I have always liked music and singing, and choir at the college level allows me to continue. Choir director Dr. Vogt is really a great role model," and Dave says members of the Concert Choir and Mixed Chorus are excited about the rest of the year. Their music this semester includes a few African pieces, and in May, they'll be touring with the jazz band to perform at area high schools, including Dave's hometown high school in Osmond, Nebraska.
Teaching: It's in the Family
"Teaching is always in the family, and I view it as a way to give back some of what I've been given over the years." Dave indicates he's passionate about teaching at the high school level. In addition to teaching, he'd like to be able to coach athletics. He already has a head start on coaching: last summer, he led his team of seven- and eight-year olds to the Little League baseball district championship.
Intramural Sports.
Dave also has been involved in intramurals on campus, participating in softball and basketball teams the past two years. This year, he's looking forward to the upcoming dodge ball tournament. Intramurals provide a "relaxed atmosphere, and you can enjoy the competition while still having fun."
Mount Marty Atmosphere.
"The friendly, down to-earth atmosphere at Mount Marty is what stands out the most. From the minute I toured here and even now, I have seen that... everyone is receptive to each other."
