SEASON PREVIEW
The Lancers are coming off a great year that ended with a National Tournament appearance. This was Mount Marty’s third trip to the national tournament, and second in the last three years. The Lancers finished the season with a school record 24 victories and an overall record of 24-9 and were 14-4 in the GPAC, which put them in a tie for third place. Four starters graduated from last year’s squad, all of who played critical roles last year, including Honorable Mention All-American and All-Conference performer Katelynn Kunz, Honorable Mention All-Conference performers Dana Marquardt and Amber Marsden, and the career leading three-point shooter at Mount Marty Lacey Powell. These four players will be missed for their talents and leadership ability.
The Lancers are returning six letter winners that will bring experience to this year’s squad. Senior Michelle Amundson is a two-time Honorable Mention All-American and three-time All-Conference performer. Senior Kelly Schilling is a returning letter winner who will be looked to for playing time and leadership. Juniors Cassie Neth, part-time starter, and top reserve Jenny Miller will look to increase their roles this season. Junior transfer Kendra Schomer is coming into the Lancer program from USD, where she was a two-year player. Sophomore letter winners Kylie Gross and Whitney Lickteig are both post players who saw playing time as freshmen and will be counted on for increased minutes this season. Other sophomores are Amanda Bigge, Kellie Boer, Cortney Bullington, Becky Deighton, Jennifer Duff, Nicky Huth, Kara Larson, Amanda Mentzer, Emily Schilling, and transfer Tierney Schumacher, and all of them will be competing for a varsity spot. Mount Marty has nine incoming freshmen who will be looking to contribute to our Varsity and Junior Varsity program. The freshman class is very talented class who could push our upperclassmen.
The Lancers are looking forward to another successful season, both on and off the court. The Lancers will continue their up-tempo style of play along with a pressure style of defense. Mount Marty should have a good mix of experience and youth, with a very strong perimeter game. The Lancers have quality athletes at the post positions that will need to step up their game for them to have another great season.
