Jacquelyn Osnes Named MMC Mother Jerome Schmitt Scholar
Mount Marty College student Jacquelyn Osnes, Rapid City, SD, was recently selected as the Mother Jerome Schmitt Presidential Scholar for 20111-2012.The prestigious full tuition scholarship is awarded to a senior based on scholastic achievement, participation and contribution to the academic and civic community, along with faculty recommendations.
Osnes is an elementary and special education major at Mount Marty College with aspirations of attending graduate school for a degree in speech pathology or special education. She is active in a variety of campus organizations including Education Club, ADMIT club, Mixed Choir, and Campus Ministry. She has also served as an Orientation Leader, Ambassador, student tutor at the Learning Center, and a writer for The Moderator.
According to Sarah Carda, Vice President and Dean for Student Affairs, Jacqui is a deserving recipient. Jacqui is truly an inspirational student whose faith permeates all her involvement and activities. She is a bright student who is willing to give of her time and talent for the betterment of the College and others.
Jacqui comes from a family that has shown a life-long commitment to Mount Marty and the Church. They have provided a firm foundation on which to thrive academically and personally, Carda added.
According to Associate Professor of Teacher Education, Sister Candyce Chrystal, Jacqui is an insightful person who is able to read the world and people around her and learn from that experience as well as from her textbooks and classroom experiences. She is definitely worthy of the Mother Jerome Schmitt Scholarship. Her personality, her gifts and talents, and her faith all indicate a person committed to making a difference for others.
Upon hearing of her selection for the honor, Osnes said, Receiving this scholarship is just one of the many blessings that I have received in my time at Mount Marty. In the Gospel of Luke, Gods people are reminded that to whom much has been given, of him much will be required. In my remaining time at Mount Marty and even after that, I hope to give back to this community in every opportunity possible.
The Mother Jerome Schmitt Presidential Scholarship is presented every year in honor of its namesake, Mother Jerome. She assisted in opening Mount Marty Academy in 1922, where she taught for ten years. In 1932 she was elected Prioress of Sacred Heart Convent and served in that position for 29 years. Under her leadership, Mount Marty Junior College began in 1936. Mother Jerome Schmitt served as Mount Marty Colleges first president from 1936-1957.
Osnes is the daughter of John and Joni Osnes, Rapid City, S.D.
