Mount Marty College Alumni Receive Distinguished Achievement Awards
Two Mount Marty alumni were honored for their achievements at the college’s recent Alumni Days banquet. Deidre Flaherty, Missoula, Mont. was recognized with the Distinguished Service to Church and Community Award and Jon Swegarden, Fargo, N.D. received the 2011 award for Distinguished Professional Achievement.
Flaherty, a 2001 MMC graduate and co-owner of Flaherty Financial Services, runs a successful financial planning and investment company and volunteers for numerous agencies in Missoula. She currently serves on the YWCA board, is past President of the Missoula Businesswomen’s Network (MBN) and advisor of the 2011 MBN Women’s Symposium. For more than seven years, she has devoted time to the MBN helping promote woman-owned and operated businesses in Missoula and western Montana.
Other organizations that have benefited from Flaherty’s good works include the Missoula Food Bank’s ROOTS program, Missoula Community Theatre, and the Fiesta for Flagship program – helping enhance social, academic, and cultural achievement for Missoula’s young people.
Flaherty’s volunteerism includes planning, organizing and fundraising for countless church, civic, and educational groups. A friend and co-worker, Christine Johnson, said of Flaherty, “Deirdre helps empower women and children in particular and contributes to the community in so many ways. She does it all without publicity and acknowledgement. She is very deserving of the MMC Distinguished Service to Church and Community Award.”
Swegarden, a 1981 respiratory therapy grad, created Precision Diagnostic Services (PDS), Inc. in 1998 as a full-service diagnostic and treatment facility for sleep disorders. Partnering with small community hospitals and large health systems, PDS served seven states and performed over 7000 sleep studies annually.
The company’s success created interest from major medical facilities and was sold to Seredor Corporation from Miami, Florida, in 2010. This success has now taken PDS to a national presence in sleep disorder diagnostics. Swegarden continues to serve as President and CEO of PDS, Inc.
Under Swegarden’s leadership, PDS is one of the largest providers of sleep disorder diagnostic services to health care facilities in the country. His staff monitors patients throughout the country and interpret scored results for precise treatment. His company has treated thousands of patients with sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, and periodic limb movement.
Swegarden has been recognized and received prestigious awards by the United States Small Business Administration in Washington D.C.; the state of North Dakota, the Fargo-Moorhead Chamber of Commerce, among others. Swegarden and his company have received accolades from patients and professionals from all over the country.
According to fellow MMC alumnus, Jim Dufek, “Jon’s success started with his medical education at Mount Marty and grew to a nationally recognized company that helps thousands of people every year. He is well-deserving of the Distinguished Professional Achievement Award for 2011.”
