Second Annual Women in Science Program Held
Mount Marty College hosted 220 area students Tuesday, October 18 for the second annual Women in Science conference for eighth grade girls. The conference’s goal is to stimulate interest in science and technology careers and encourage eighth grade girls to pursue the math and science courses needed to prepare them for careers in these fields.
Students engaged in hands-on activities and sessions on careers including medicine, nurse anesthesia, veterinary medicine, microbiology, nursing, forensic science, EMS, and many others.
Participants included students from South Dakota schools: Centerville, Menno, Yankton, Dakota Valley, Hurley, Sacred Heart, Avon, Andes Central, Viborg, Scotland, Beresford, Wagner, Gregory, Marty, and Alcester-Hudson. Nebraska students from Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Niobrara, Wausa, and Cedar Catholic also attended.
The Women in Science event is provided by First Dakota National Bank, Mount Marty College, RTEC (Regional Technical Education Center), AHEC (Yankton Rural Area Health Education Center), and supported by the South Dakota Discovery Center, South Dakota Space Grant Consortium, South Dakota Dental Association, McDonalds, and Delta Dental.
