Mount Marty College student Daniel Filsinger, Clearwater, NE, was recently selected as the Mother Jerome Schmitt Presidential Scholar for the 2012-2013 academic year. The prestigious, full tuition scholarship is awarded to a senior based on scholastic achievement, participation, and contribution to the academic and civic community, along with faculty recommendations.

Filsinger is a business and graphic design double major at Mount Mart College and is ready to enter the business world upon graduation. "I'm confident that everything I have learned in and out of the classrooms at MMC has prepared me for a successful career. Many of the activities, committees, and boards I have been on have definitely prepared me to serve in a business environment."

Active in a variety of campus organizations, Filsinger is currently a member of the MMC track and field team and was named 2011 Men's Field Event Athlete of the Year. In addition to athletics, Filsinger is a current SGA member and active in ADMIT, SWAT, YES, FCA, Ambassadors, Campus Ministry, the HLC Reaccreditation Committee, was an orientation leader, and was a part of the presidential search committee.

According to Sarah Carda, Vice President and Dean for Student Affairs, Daniel is a deserving recipient. "Daniel will make an exceptional Mother Jerome Schmidt Scholar. He is a hard-working, conscientious, and faith filled student. Daniel has already given the MMC community so much of his time and talent and will only continue to lead the students in positive growth by his example."

According to Instructor of Graphic Design and Media Arts, Andrew Huff, "Daniel has made me proud, as his teacher and advisor, and I am sure will continue to do so as he grows in the program, his collegiate life and beyond."

Upon hearing of his selection for the honor, Filsinger said, "Receiving this scholarship is just one of the many blessings that I have received in my time at Mount Marty. The Mother Jerome Schmitt scholarship is the most elite scholarship a student can receive while attending MMC. I am proud to represent all that Mother Jerome did for the college and hope I can help to further her vision for it."

The Mother Jerome Schmitt Presidential Scholarship is presented every year in honor of its namesake, Mother Jerome. She assisted in opening Mount Marty Academy in 1922, where she taught for ten years. In 1932 she was elected Prioress of Sacred Heart Convent and served in that position for 29 years. Under her leadership, Mount Marty Junior College began in 1936. Mother Jerome Schmitt served as Mount Marty College's first president from 1936-1957.

Filsinger is the son of Kevin and Celine Filsinger, Clearwater, NE.
