Mount Marty College is a private, Catholic, Benedictine co-educational liberal arts college serving students of all faiths. The Watertown location is a nonresidential branch campus for Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD. Serving primarily a nontraditional student body, the branch campus has been located in Watertown since 1979. The Watertown location exists in northeast South Dakota to serve the Mission of the College by providing educational opportunities and degrees that “prepare students for a contemporary world of work, service to the human community, and personal growth.” The core values and Benedictine tradition provide the structure and basis of Mount Marty College: awareness of God, community, hospitality, and life-long learning.

The Watertown location of Mount Marty College enrolls approximately 250 students each semester. An estimated 55% of Watertown students are full-time, 80% are female, and the average age is 29. A large number of students at the Watertown location, approximately 35 to 40%, travel to Watertown for coursework from within a 60 mile radius, with the remaining students being local. Faculty at the Watertown location are primarily adjunct who combine their academic credentials with contemporary, real-life work experiences.
The Place
The branch campus is located in Watertown, SD. Watertown is a city of 20,000 located on the Big Sioux River and bordered by Lake Kampeska and Lake Pelican. Located at the Arrow Avenue/11th Street NE intersection, the Watertown location administration building is adjacent to Lake Area Technical Institute. The MMC/Watertown administration building houses 2 classrooms, offices, bookstore, and a small computer lab/conference room. Most Watertown location coursework is offered on a once-a-week basis and primarily at night. A few morning and early afternoon classes are held in the classrooms at the administration building. The majority of late afternoon and evening classes are held at Lake Area Tech. The Timmerman library, accessed by MMC students and staffed in the evening by MMC employees, is also located on the LATI campus. Administrative offices are open from 8:00am to 9:30pm Monday through Thursday during academic semesters.
