Mount Marty College (MMC) has selected Morgan Citterman as the Mother Jerome Schmitt Presidential Scholar for the 2017-2018 academic year. A junior nursing major and music minor from Ivanhoe, Minnesota, Citterman was selected to receive the prestigious, full-tuition scholarship based on her scholastic achievement, participation and contribution to the academic and civic community, along with faculty recommendations.
“Receiving the Mother Jerome Scholarship is an absolute honor,” Citterman says. “To see that I’ve actually made an impact on those around me is incredibly humbling and motivating. I want to keep doing that — hopefully I can continue to touch people’s lives.”
Citterman’s involvement at MMC spans music, sports and numerous clubs and activities. She has played with the concert band and jazz band, and recently served as pianist in the pit band for the school musical. She’s also been a member of mixed choir, chamber choir and the vocal a cappella ensemble Smooth Benediction. A member of the Nursing Club, Catholic Leadership and Campus Ministries, she is also a thrower for MMC’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams.
“I love how at Mount Marty, we really are here to help other people, to impact other people’s lives,” Citterman says of how Mother Jerome’s vision continues to thrive on the MMC campus today. “I see that in our core values — hospitality, community, lifelong learning and awareness of God. As future nurses and teachers and whatever other careers students are pursing, we’re here to learn, and we’re here to teach, and we’re here to continue learning how we can impact others.”
The Mother Jerome Schmitt Presidential Scholarship is presented every year in honor of its namesake, Mother Jerome. She assisted in opening Mount Marty Academy in 1922, where she taught for 10 years. In 1932 she was elected prioress of Sacred Heart Convent and served in that position for 29 years. Under her leadership, Mount Marty Junior College began in 1936. Mother Jerome Schmitt served as Mount Marty College’s first president from 1936 to 1957.
