Chris Kassin Named New Athletic Director at Mount Marty College

YANKTON — Mount Marty College (MMC) in Yankton, South Dakota, announced today that Chris Kassin will be the new athletic director at MMC. Kassin will assume responsibility for the athletic department effective July 1 and work closely with current, longtime athletic director Chuck Iverson, who announced in January his plans to retire in June 2018. Iverson will move to the assistant athletic director role for his final year of service at MMC.

A graduate of the University of South Dakota (USD) with a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and Master of Public Administration, Kassin comes to MMC after serving as assistant athletic director at USD, where he worked with an athletic development team that raised nearly $15 million in 2016. During his years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, he’s consistently exceeded fundraising goals and expanded donor membership, along with providing donor campaign leadership, major gift management, strategy creation, market outreach and more. In addition to the assistant athletic director role, Kassin, a former student-athlete, spent nearly a decade as assistant coach of USD men’s basketball.

“I knew only a special opportunity would convince me to leave USD,” Kassin says of his new position. “The more people I met at Mount Marty, the more I knew this was that opportunity. I am thankful for President Long putting his faith in me. His vision for Mount Marty is robust and forward-thinking, and it’s exciting and energizing to be joining his team.”

In addition to growing financial support, marketing the college’s athletics programs and building strong relationships in the community and throughout the region, Kassin will strive to create an atmosphere where student-athletes reach their full potential.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping young people develop academically, athletically, socially and spiritually,” he says.

Kassin’s role at MMC will draw on his strengths as well as his years of experience.

“I am very happy to welcome Chris Kassin to the Mount Marty College community,” says MMC President Marc Long. “He has spent more than a decade learning and leading through intercollegiate athletics, from coaching to fundraising. He’s passionate about the success of student-athletes — in faith, in the classroom and on the court and field of play. I’m very excited to work with him to raise the achievements of MMC and Lancer Athletics far into the future.”

Kassin is looking forward to becoming more involved in the Yankton community, along with his wife, Katie (Schwartz) Kassin; 3-year-old daughter, Collins; and 10-month-old son, Kellen.

President Long and Kassin will answer questions from KYNT’s Scott Kooistra and will be available for additional questions this Friday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m. during a Facebook live Q & A on Mount Marty College's Facebook page.

Part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the MMC Lancers compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). For more on MMC Lancer Athletics, visit mmclancers.com.
