Senior Math Majors Present at 18th Annual Mathematics on the Northern Plains Conference
April 20, 2017
Five senior mathematics majors from Mount Marty College (MMC) in Yankton, South Dakota, recently presented at the 18th annual Mathematics on the Northern Plains Conference. MMC student presenters Kelsey Abbey, Jordan Houdek, Rachel Shippy, Alexandra Suriani and Denae Veldkamp, along with two department faculty, attended the conference, hosted by Augustana University, on Saturday, April 8, in Sioux Falls.
The Mathematics on the Northern Plains Conference provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to present results of their mathematical research or projects in the form of 20-minute talks. Presenting at a regional conference is a graduation requirement for MMC math majors.
“This experience is invaluable in preparing our graduates for their professional lives,” says Sr. Bonita Gacnik, chair of the MMC Department of Mathematics.
This year’s conference included the following MMC presentations:
- Kelsey Abbey, “3D Realizations of Certain Neighborhood Complexes”
- Jordan Houdek, “Google Page Rank”
- Rachel Shippy, “Perspectives on Infinity”
- Alexandra Suriani, “Poker Theory: Randomized Data Set Simulation vs. Professional Poker Play Strategy”
- Denae Veldkamp, “Mathematics and Free Throws”
The MMC Department of Mathematics offers majors and minors in mathematics, focused on both theory and application. To learn more about studying math at MMC, visit mtmc.edu/academics/majors-and-programs/natural-sciences/mathematics.
