November 7, 2018
YANKTON, SD – The Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery and the Mount Marty College Music Department will present their 36th annual Vespers performance on Saturday, December 1 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 2 at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The free performances will be heldin the beautiful Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel on the Mount Marty College campus.
"Once again, we are pleased to invite the entire Yankton community in sharing the annual tradition of Choral Vespers at Bishop Marty Chapel,” said Brandon Connell, director of choral activities at Mount Marty College. “As we sing many of the season’s favorite hymns and carols, we give special attention this year to the traditional chant sung in Vespers on Christmas Day, “Hodie Christus natus est,” which proclaims “Today, Christ is born.”
“The gathering of communities during the Advent and Christmas season represents human fellowship at its very best,” added Connell. “It is especially meaningful when we immerse ourselves in Sacred Scripture, in prayer, and in sacred song. Hodie, or “today”, we rejoice in Christ’s birth, Christ’s ministry, Christ’s death and resurrection, and Christ’s very presence in our lives “today”.
The talented A Cappella Choir of Yankton High School, under the direction of Angela Larson, will join Mount Marty as special musical guests for all three performances Much of the program will also highlight the beautiful work of the Mount Marty Concert Band, the Mount Marty College Choral Union, the Mount Marty Chamber Singers, and Smooth Benediction, the college’s pop a cappella ensemble.
Tickets to Vespers are free, but space is limited to 475 people per performance with a limit of six tickets per person. Tickets will be available on Wednesday, November 13 on a first come first served basis at two locations: the Sacred Heart Monastery Gift Shop or the Mount Marty College Pages Bookstore.
