Lofthus to Exhibit - Life in the Vast Lane

Published Date9\26\2013
From October 4th through November 11th Yankton Area Arts will feature an exhibit of Rich Lofthus' photography entitled "Life in the Vast Lane" at the GAR Hall in Yankton.

Dr. Rich Lofthus is a Professor of History at Mount Marty College and is a North Dakota native and graduate of the University of North Dakota. He has been an avid photographer for over twenty years and his approach to photography has been inspired by the work of photographers such as Jim Brandenburg and Tom Mangelsen. The exhibit will feature photographs of landscapes, architecture and wildlife found in Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Oregon, California and Utah that were collected by eschewing interstate highways and traveling the less-frequented back roads. Lofthus observed that "as a professor who specializes in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, my teaching often focuses on war and destruction, but photography enables me to change gears and focus on the beauty of this world. Photography provides me with an opportunity to record and share that aesthetic experience with others."

A public "First Friday" reception to open the exhibit will take place at 5:00 PM on Friday, October 4th at the GAR Hall on Douglas Street, with a gallery talk scheduled that evening at 5:30 PM.
