Specializing in helping working adults complete their undergraduate degree, Mount Marty’s Watertown campus offers a Bachelor of Arts in human service to give you a great foundation for a career or graduate studies in counseling, social work or occupational therapy. Are you considering getting your Bachelor’s degree? Now’s the time to take the next step as we’ve made it even easier to make a difference through a degree plan catered to your busy schedule.

The first of its kind in the state of South Dakota, Criminal Justice and Human Service degree students now attend classes using a Flex Option course structure. Students meet twice per week, one class on campus and one class is online – either lived or recorded. You can attend the second class on campus as well if you prefer to learn on-campus. By taking two classes per week, and having one of those classes available to attend online, it cuts class times from sixteen weeks to eight weeks. The combination is a win for all, reducing the length of time it takes to graduate and allowing greater flexibility to complete required courses.

  • and dozens of other occupations devoted to making a difference.

The Human Service program fosters sociological and psychological insight into human behavior, teaches students to apply it and helps you prepare for the next step in your career.

  • Gain a broad theoretical basis in understanding human behavior from a psychological and sociological perspective.
  • Understand and apply different research methods.
  • Learn more about ethical issues related to search and social behavior.
  • Examine factors such as gender, race and income, and use those findings to shed light on issues such as abuse and neglect, youth at risk, chemical dependency and inequality. 

Take elective courses in juvenile justice, marriage and family or psychology of the exceptional child, and work side by side with faculty to conduct a research study and develop an applied research project.

Human service students have completed internships and service learning experiences at many area institutions, including: The Human Service Agency, Beacon Center, Benedictine Multicultural Center and area school districts.

Within their program of study, Mount Marty students can also meet course requirements for seeking certification as a Level One Drug and Alcohol Counselor in the State of South Dakota following graduation.
